Dog obedience training refers to the strategies you use to enforce good, healthy behavior in your dog, while discouraging negative behavior. In order to effectively train your dog to be obedient, it starts with having a working knowledge of the basics. Effective communication with your dog is the number one factor in all dog training. In this article, I will discuss with you some basic training techniques you can use to reinforce obedient behavior in your dog.

First of all, realize that dogs understand the tone of voice and body language, not the verbal instruction. This means that it is better to discourage bad behavior with a single forceful word -- like no -- than anything else. Let me put it another way -- if a dog has made a mess in your home, lecturing the dog or rubbing its nose in the mess is not very effective at making the dog more obedient. They do not understand this type of communication very well. However, a quick no is easily understood.

Also, communication must be constant. Since dogs will recognize the tone of your voice and your body language, make sure you consistently use the same tone and body language when reinforcing good behavior. For example, if you only command for your dog to come to you when they have done something wrong, then you're reinforcing the fact that coming to you is associated with getting punished. Better would be to call them to you when they have done something positive, to reinforce your love for them.

Let's not neglect hand signals as tools for training a dollar to be obedient. Have you ever watched a dog on television perform a wonderful trick just because of the trainer gives them a hand signal? Hand signals are an excellent tool for dog obedience training. You must be able to keep their attention however, for it to be effective. When first teaching them with hand signals, control the distractions around them.

Finally, make sure to keep it fun. If you are training your dog to be obedient with a warm and loving heart you will have a lot better chance of success with your training than you will if you do it with anger or resentment.
